What should my CV say?

In my role dealing with recruitment for a major UK corporate I have had to review many thousands of CVs for all levels of employment from clerical grade "school leaver" intake, through Graduate recruitment all the way up to Senior Executive level.
The appropriate style and content of a CV at each of those levels is radically different.

Need more than one CV?
|
Does a "one size fits all" CV deliver the result you want? In some circumstances it is fine, perhaps someone looking for a first job, but even then it depends on the job. A "core" cv which you tailor to each application should deliver better results - but if you are sending a large number this can become a very demanding task. Nevertheless for senior and high paid positions the investment in time, effort, research and professional review can make the difference between getting the job and not. |

Sending an unsolicited CV?
|
Let's face it 90% go straight in the bin unread. How to you make yours one of the 10% that don't? One simple way to make this less likely is to contact the prospective employer first and obtain clear "contact" details-i.e. the name or,at least,the job title of the person to whom you should send your C.V. Another way is to have your C.V. written professionally so that it stands out from all the others! |

Worried about the length of your CV?
|

A potential employer may have dozens or even hundreds of applicants. A large CV isn't going to be welcome. Focus on those key elements of your career most pertinent to the role you are seeking. |
